The RIALTO ® system

Installation method

PREPARATORY ACTIVITIES

The installation of the RIALTO ® system must be preceded by the following activities:

  • Examination of the original design documents available, to understand the construction characteristics of the bridge and subsequent geometric survey of the railway site, to obtain its exact morphology.

  • Execution of exploratory tests to determine the actual distance between the intrados of the crosspieces and the extrados of the bridge, verify the shape and state of conservation of the ballast walls, identify any underground services, evaluate the characteristics of the material to be excavated.

  • Executive design, to be developed according to norms and specifications.

  • Production of the customized membranes, equipped with unique identification markings, technical data sheets and accessories.

  • Planning of the intervention, involving the network management, contractors and any third party bodies in order to optimize the times and logistics of the construction site.

  • Removal, temporary or permanent, of any interfering subservices.

SITE PREPARATION

In addition to the usual construction site setup, it is advisable to carry out in advance all the activities that do not require line interruption, such as:

  • The formation of access routes to the intervention area.

  • The formation of a construction site area near the bridge.

  • The provision of a lighting system in case of night working.

  • The preparation of suitable altimetric references for the excavation.

  • The procurement of materials, components, work vehicles and equipment.

  • The preparation of the metal structures for the movement of the membranes.

  • The possible unrolling and re-rolling of the membranes, in the case of transversal unrolling.

  • The supply of new ballast for the reconstruction of the roadbed.

Removal of the superstructure

The removal of the superstructure occurs by cutting the tracks into spans of suitable length to be lifted and stacked along the line or in another suitable position, using road-rail loaders.

Excavation and shaping of installation surfaces

The ballast and fill material are removed via loaders or via excavators.

The formation of the installation plans represents a particularly important phase of the intervention and requires specific competence and experience of the operators.

For the regularization layer of the laying surface, it is advisable to use a poorly assorted crushed stone with a size of no less than 20 mm so that it is not absorbed by the underlying material.

The membrane installation surface must then be adequately rolled and compacted to avoid sagging and deformation.

INSTALLATION OF DRAINAGE SYSTEM

The formation of the drains requires an excavation located at a lower level than the membrane laying surface, suitable for hosting the wells and pipes. For drains that pass through the structure (the deck or side walls) it is also necessary to carry out specific core drilling.

It is extremely important in these phases:

  • The creation of correct slopes of the drain pipes.

  • The perfect horizontality of the wells.

  • The optimal compaction of the manhole installation surface.

  • The accurate welding of all components.

Preparation of the side fixing surfaces

The side walls containing the ballast must be adequately cleaned with pressurized water.

Once cleaning is complete, it is necessary to choose the optimal position for fixing the edges of the membrane, keeping the following in mind:

The membrane must be fixed on a solid and flat support. If necessary, a strip of at least 20 cm must be rehabilitated using high-strength, quick-setting mortars.

Rimozione dell’armamento e del ballast

If the side walls have sharp edges, it is advisable to smooth them using an abrasive disc.

Scavo e formazione delle superfici di posa

It is preferable that the edge of the diaphragm is immediately above the ballast, avoiding large portions of uncovered diaphragm which could be damaged.

Rimozione dell’armamento e del ballast

The membrane must be fixed on a vertical or inclined surface, avoiding fixings on horizontal surfaces which do not allow the removal of water.

INSTALLATION OF THE MEMBRANE

The unrolling of the membrane must take place according to the methods defined in the project, paying attention to these aspects:

  • Operator safety. The handling requires the simultaneous presence of lifting equipment and operators on the ground and involves rolls of significant weight and size. All lifting equipment must comply with safety regulations.

  • Integrity of the membrane. It is necessary to avoid impacts, falls or strong abrasions from compromising the integrity of the membranes. In the event of cuts, they must be repaired using the specific kit supplied with the membranes, following the instructions contained therein.

  • Correct positioning of the membrane. It is advisable for the membrane to be unrolled gradually and regularly, avoiding the formation of creases, buckles and misalignments which could be difficult to eliminate once the membrane is on the ground.

JOINTS, FIXINGS AND FLAPS

In the case of multiple membranes, after laying them on the ground, the joints are made, either by overlapping or riveted, according to the project specifications and specifications.

Once any joints have been completed, the membrane is fixed along the ballast containment walls.

The membrane can be cut manually using well-sharpened cutters, preferably with a hooked blade, of the type indicated in the figure.

Also at the shoulders, the membrane must be turned up along the edges of the excavation, to form a sort of ‘tub’ whose edges must be kept no less than 35-40 cm from the intrados of the crosspieces.

Finally, before laying the crushed stone, it is necessary to make the water outlet holes in correspondence with the wells, taking care to match the holes with the wells.

RESTORATION OF THE BALLAST

Il ripristino della massicciata ferroviariaThe restoration of the ballast must be carried out using new crushed stone, of a quality compliant with the specifications, and well washed.
It will be necessary to proceed with the laying of a first layer of crushed stone, up to a level slightly lower than that of the crossbar intrados. The additional ballast will then be laid following the installation of the track spans.

RESTORATION OF THE WEAPON

Finally, we will proceed with the repositioning of the track spans removed at the beginning of the intervention, their connection using temporary clamps, and the further work of laying ballast, tamping, replacement of the tracks and definitive connection through welding and possible iron change.

MEMBRANE ACCEPTANCE TESTS

In addition to the quality control tests to be carried out during production, the membranes used will need to be subjected to specific acceptance tests regarding the most significant performance characteristics.

CHECKS DURING WORK

The effectiveness of the RIALTO® system mainly depends on the correct execution of all the planned processes.

Furthermore, since the intervention involves a series of details that can no longer be inspected and processes that are no longer repeatable, it is advisable that each process is subjected to careful monitoring during construction, to be carried out jointly between the Contracting Company and the Works Management, according to the specifications and project requirements
